After some concerns which were raised last week, we'd like to ask your opinion on who should be able to see your Community profile page?
That's the page that tells people about you, and links to your friends and recent posts etc.
Why not check out the news from the wildlife enquiries team?

Hi H.
That wouldn't have worked in this case! The perpetrator is an RSPB member. Deceit isn't restricted to non RSPB members.
Cheers, Linda.

Hi Tom,
I suggest email verification, before registration. This makes the registration two stage to prevent bots getting by the process. Email address is given to RSPB, then RSPB send back a unique code with a timed expiry, for each application, transaction code is entered by user, to validate his registration. Similar to what the banks are using to set up new payments, with a gadget code reader (Nat West), or Santander to a mobile phone. In the case of the banks, they are concerned about stolen laptops, etc.

Hi JSB,
Your method is great but there are a couple of potential problems with it.
Firstly as the RSPB is the premier place for info on birds most people wouldn't want to spend a few mins (I know it's not a lot) just to ask "what's this bird etc"
Secondly, the banks have sophisticated software that coimes at a price, I wouldn't think the RSPB has the amount of money available to put towards an automated acceptance service, of if manual possible not the man hours available to accept every membership request.
I fear though that this may be the only way forward as spammers will do anything to promote products - I'd like to know who takes advantage of these emails as someone must of it wouldn't be worth sending them out.
As for trolls etc these types will always find a way though!

What about a poll in regard to stars and good eggs?
That is an absolutely excellent idea. I give it my whole support.

Since I registered 2 years ago, I can't remember what the current process is...! Surely the e-mail address needs to be valid in the first place to enable reception of joining confirmation?

done..........
Hi H, if someone wanted to post a query, then they would need to register, as they have to do now. I was anticipating an off the shelf plug-in module, that would do the email verification, but it was only at the idea stage, as a suggestion.
