Hey folks,Mammals are truly fascinating creatures, they come in all shapes and sizes and can be found in a whole host of places, each with diverse lifestyles. Over the last 10 weeks, I've been posting a Mystery mammal quiz each week to test your knowledge and to have a bit of fun. Well, I can't believe 10 weeks have flown by already. You've all been absolutely marvelous mammal detectives and to round things off I thought I'd throw in a poll to see what your favourite mystery mammal is. So what's it to be, the furtive Stoat?, the cunning Fox?, the prickly Hedgehog? As well as voting for your favourite critter, when not share any photos or experiences you may have!Enjoy and get voting!ClaireP.S - Results will be posted early next week.
Pine marten, I would love to see one. I 'may' have seen one in France but it was at a distance and running across a road.

I would love to see one too as I regularly see Stoats and weasels here at the Lodge. I feel a trip to Scotland may be in order!
That B&B featured on Springwatch last night looks a good place to start although I expect it will be fully booked for the next 5 years after that bit of film!! Lol!

Anyone seen Pine martens elsewhere? No pygmy shrew fans out there??
Had a possible pine marten, while the site was closed, but no picy to prove, although unless there was a resurected beech marten there's nothing else it could be :)
It's both what you do and the way that you do it!

Hedgehog for me :-)

I do like Hedgehogs, but haven't seen one in years. There was a time when i would hear a snuffle or see an odd black shape scurry across the lawn or find the characteristic black tarry droppings, but these days, not so much as a road casualty... it's a real shame, because they are real characters! Though my garden is as wild as it can get, without being overgrown, I sometimes wonder, in our desire to make our gardens perfect do we make it difficult for those poor ol' hogs or like to go for a wander through flower patches and across our lawns.
Come on folks only 13 votes, does noone else have a favourite :)
I haven`t seen a Pygmy Shrew since I was a child yet have seen loads of rats.
Now thats a mystery to me.
Pygmy shrew - - A Winner!
Some really interesting figures there, edgebander. I did a small mammal survey a few years back and Bank vole were the most common monitored species. I have only ever seen one Pygmy shrew myself and not being terribly scientific for a moment, it was very cute! We have the odd Water shrew up at the Lodge every now and then though.
