Forget the fab four, think the fab 12. For the next 12 weeks, it’s quiz time again and this time, I will be testing your knowledge of British beetles. Many beetles have metallic or iridescent coloured elytra and thorax, making them - the real shining stars of the show. Beetles can live in a wide range of habitats. Some can fly and others cannot. Some have long antennae, and others long legs. Some have even mastered the art of disguise! Prepared to be be(et)dazzled and if you’re feeling lucky, perhaps you can even guess the bonus quiz question!Magical mystery beetle quiz #10Clue: Not quite London pride.Bonus quiz: Louse allied envoy.

Seaman,
Congrats on wedding anniversary. MrT and I celebrated 12 years last weekend.
Congratulations to all of you who guessed Bombardier beetle (Brachinus crepitans). First a bit about the clues. First clue: Not quite London Pride. Bombardier is an iconic English beer (apparently). Second clue: Planes, trains, but no automobiles. Bombardier is the world’s only manufacturer of both planes and trains. They do not make cars.
Growing up to 1cm, Bombardier beetles have a reddy brown thorax and their head and elytra are dark in colour with bluey-green iridescence. It is this feature that distinguishes it from othe beetles. A type of Ground beetle, though dormant in winter, Bombardier beetles can be found in open dry country, preferring chalk grassland.
A picture of a Bombardier beetle can be found here.
Did you know: the Bombardier beetle gets its name from its habit of squirting hot liquid at its enemies.
Bonus quiz answer: All you need is love. 1967, Yellow Submarine.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery beetle quiz here soon!
Take care,
Claire
