Congratulations to all of you who guessed Wavy hair grass (Deschampsia flexuosa). Let’s start with the clues! First clue: Mice foul spas, as had ex. This is simply an anagram of the Latin name for this grass Deschampsia flexuosa. The second clue: Undulating thatch. Something that is undulating could be seen as being wavy. Thatch is a slang word for hair.
As a perennial grass, the Wavy hair grass has wiry rolled leaves. It is commonly found on heaths, moors and in open woods. They prefer acidic, dry sandy soils and tend to avoid chalk and limestone conditions. The grass flowers in June/July and the spikelets are silvery brown in colour. Their leaves form tussocks and the swards can grow as tall as 20cm.
A picture of Wavy hair grass is found here.
Did you know that: Wavy hair grass is a species of bunchgrass. A grass that grows in a tussock or bunch!
