Also came across a heavy metal fan (mechanical sort) designed to be placed on top of solid fuel boiler/stove but what is has to do with grass/sedge remains a mystery?!

Sounds like a connection to golf courses. As WB suggests above perhaps one of the Bent grasses (Common or Creeping) which is used for golf course turf. Also, Perennial Rye-grass I think is used.
No idea where the "heavy metal fan" clue comes into it though.
