They can be a plant or a fungi, a bird or a mammal, a fish or an insect!MAGICAL MYSTERY QUIZ#9This frounce may be hard to swallow.

Congratulations to all of you who guessed Trichomonas gallinae. First a bit about the clues! The first clue: This frounce may be hard to swallow. Frounce is one of many names given to the complaint Trichomonosis, which is caused by Trichomonas gallinae. Frounce refers to the disease in birds of prey. Hard to swallow refers to the fact that Trichomonas gallinae are capable of blocking a bird’s throat. The second clue: smooth incisor is simply an anagram of Trichomonosis.
The protozoan known as Trichomonas gallinae multiples rapidly by binary fission and is responsible for the disease Trichomonosis which is found in many species of bird, most notably finches. Trichomonas gallinae live in a bird’s upper digestive tract and its actions progressively block the bird’s throat, making it unable to swallow food. The bird eventually dies from starvation. Birds with this disease show signs of general illness, for example lethargy and fluffed-up plumage, but affected birds may also drool saliva, regurgitate food, have difficulty in swallowing or show laboured breathing.
A picture of a Trichomonas gallinae is found here.
Did you know that: once out of the body the host, Trichomonas gallinae quickly perish.
Keep an eye out for next week’s mystery quiz!
Take care,
Claire
