Prepare to get your feet wet and get your fins in a flap!Each Monday for 12 weeks I will be posting a little teaser for you. Without looking in books or on the internet (i.e - no cheating), see if you can identify the UK fish On Wednesday, so as long as no-one has guessed it, I will post one clue. Congratulations to all of you who guessed Common bream (Abramis brama). First, a bit about the clues: The first clue: Messrs Berg and Jansson make some noise. The latin name for Common bream is also the name of a Swedish rock band. ‘Abramis brama’ were formed in 1997 by Dennis Berg and Fredrik Jansson. To datethey have produced 5 albums. The second clue: Noli turbare mihi pro blicca bjoerkna! This is Latin for ‘Do not confuse me for Silver bream’. Common bream are easily confused with silver or white bream, especially when they are young. The best way to distinguish between the two is to count the scales downwards from the first ray of the dorsal fin to the lateral line. Silver bream have 10 or less, Common bream, 11 plus.
Belonging to the Cyprinidae family, Common bream are found in ponds, lakes and canals and slow-flowing rivers. Common bream can grow up to 22 inches (55cm) in length and can weigh up to 4 kilograms (8.8lb). Common bream are schooling fish and are bottom feeders which are partial to worms, larvae, water plants and plankton.
