Excuse me for joining this community in a bit of a hurry ! Just about a mile outside of the village Burstwick in East Yorkshire (passed the golf centre) Halsham Road, I spotted osprey feeding on top of large dead tree near the roadside (I nearly crashed my van) ! The fish was still alive (just) - it appeared to be a large goldfish or carp. Anybody familiar with the area know that theres a couple of large fishing ponds nearby (Halsham). I can only guess that feeding has been quite good for this osprey. Woman in nearby house claimed the bird has been around for a few days but she had know idea it was an osprey.
Can anybody shed any light on what this bird is doing here ? At this time of year ? Is it an escaped captive bird ?
I will be returning on Saturday 17th October, with my camera this time.
hi thebones1234,
i cant shed any light on this but i too will go and have a look as i dont live to far from burstwick myself i live in one of the villages near by i will be taking my camera too

Hi Alicat, to give you the precise location it was near a 'stately house' near a small lane - there was a yellow sign advertising a fencing and posting contractor on this lane. This is roughly half to three quarters of a mile from the Burstwick Golf Centre on the road to Withernsea. You really cannot miss the 'Dead Tree'.
GOOD LUCK.
Hi thebones1234 and welcome to the forum. I can't help you either, I'm afraid, but it is really exciting news. I am looking forward to the photos so good luck with capturing it on camera.
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hello and Welcome thebones 1234.
You're right about the timing being late. As far as I know, ospreys have been gone from breeding sites in the UK for several weeks now, and all those being tracked by satellite are now in Southern Europe (2) or Africa (6). Again AFAIK, ospreys can't be kept in captivity other than short term rehab, so the most likely explanation is, this bird originates from Scandinavia and its migration has been delayed for some reason.
Good luck with the photos - if you or ALICAT can get close enough, try to see if the wing feathers are all brown (adult) or tipped with buff (juvenile), also whether it's ringed.
