Hello, I have a question, for the last 2-3 weeks I have heard woodpeckers tapping away in the woods and local surrounding area, whilst out walking the dog... I have never heard the woodpeckers doing this so early in the year... Is this normal? Has anyone else heard them? I .would be very interested to find out..
The tapping could be searching for food or drilling a nest hole as well as their method of signalling to other 'peckers that they hold the territory.

Ahh great thankyou very much... Iwondered if it might be a bit early for woodpeckers to be drilling their nest holes? However now the weather has improved who knows...
I saw a new nest hole on Tuesday. There was fresh dust at the base of a rotten tree.
Hi
GSWPs breed early. Expect courtship in March :)
It may be timed to feed young on early caterpillars

They certainly seem to be hammering away on territory in our area and even had a Lesser in my patch, first there in 30 years.
