An avenue of Wellingtonia's leading to Orton Hall

Charles, the 10th Marquess of Huntly was a keen horticulturist and planted much of the woodland around Orton Hall. In the 1850s, the Marquess and his wife, Maria, introduced many rare trees to the estate including the Wellingtonia and the exotic swamp cyprus.

The Hall is now a hotel and the avenue of trees are now owned by the Woodland Trust. I have been on an evening bat walk along the avenue and with a bat detector it shows that it is teaming with activity and bats use the avenue as a feeding flight path.
