This is a young Australian Eastern Rosella just prior to taking her maiden flight from the nest in a hollow gum tree on our property. I'd heard this youngster flapping around inside the tree for a few days, so I'd been spending a lot of time watching the tree, hoping to see her fledge. The mother rosella had delayed returning to the nest until the youngster was hungry enough to come to the nest opening looking for her. Just after this shot was taken, the mother flew to the nest, landed, and then took off again. After a bit of hesitation, the youngster took off after her. the male bird, whi had been watching from close by, flew off after his chick to make sure she was OK.
