Every so often, I’ve been mentioning the RSPB’s big campaign of the moment – or rather ‘movement’ – called Stepping up for Nature.

The idea is that all of our little steps feel all the more valuable in light of everyone else’s efforts. And it is a powerful message to those in power that, with society doing its bit, we’re looking to them to play their part too.

Today the RSPB revealed that, since we started Stepping up for Nature, we have logged in total over one million steps. Thanks, everyone!

And for all you doing things in your garden, well, you know me, I think they’re some of the best steps of all!

We’ve been counting the things that people are doing in their gardens through our Homes for Wildlife project, such as growing plants to encourage insects and leaving seedheads in place in your flower borders.

If you have yet to take part, do please give it a whirl. The idea is that you log in to our special web pages, answer some questions about your garden, and it generates suggestions of steps you can take for wildlife that are likely to be do-able in your garden.

And as today's announcement shows that you are clearly 'in your stride', for more ways to step up for nature visit www.rspb.org.uk/steppingup

My next step? To plant my Allium sphaerocephalon bulbs, 50 of which arrived from Holland yesterday. This is the display of them at Hampton Court this year which convinced me this was a 'must-have' plant for bees in the garden.
