BIRDSONG/CALLS

Having recently been woken by a Motezumas Oropendula, which sounded amazing, I  started wondering about what worldwide not just British calls/songs other birdlovers would like to be woken by.  Any preferences out there?

  • Hello Travis.

    Welcome to the forum.

I always enjoy being woken by blackbirds.  It's a fantastic sound and the best alarm clock you can get.

  • Welcome Travis.

my preference would be a Cuckoo.

  • Hi Buzzard, I really CANNOT resist this..... clock? (Sorry, being frivolous again!)

Hi Travis and welcome from me also. I am always glad to hear all my regulars as I know it means they have all made it through the night and I am in for another enjoyable day of watching them. But, if I had to choose one I guess it would be the male chaffinch who, in spring, drowns out all competition with a vengeance and once he has started he does not stop until after dusk (even manages to continue while eating!).

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Hello Travis

    Welcome to the forum.

Best bird song for me covers either the starling or the wren.  I love the starling's ability to produce a wide range of notes, it's mimickry and versatility but I also love the wren - so much sound from such a little bird.

  • Hi Kezmo.

The starling has a fantastic range and I love the mimicry.  As for the wren I still find it amazing that such a tiny wee bird can make such noise.  The sound of the goldfich is great and always a pleasure to hear.  When it comes to birdsong there is such a fantastic range and variety.

  • Hi Travis and welcome to the forum. It is one of my pleasures if I happen to be awake just before dawn to lie and listen for the first call of the day usually when it is still dark and normally it is the Robin that I hear I don't know why but there is always something exciting about this first call of the day who ever it comes from.

  • Has to be a Wren, to remind me of my childhood, (Not THAT long ago).  One would always sit near my open bedroom window in the hot Summer (When we had them), and wake me up 5.10am every s*ding day.!

    Hi Heron77

Yes you are quite right - there are so many lovely birdsongs, especially when they are all singing together :-)

  • Welcome Travis!

The nightingale.... if only! I have heard them in France though!

Like Lucybob, it's the robin for me! Sings no matter the weather from before dawn and I love to hear it!!

  • From what I can vaguely remember, didn't someone do a study of the dawn chorus a few years back and found it was the Robin who was first up?

Anyway, back on topic, for me as a singular bird it has to be the Robin or Blackbird.  Both are quite vocal here first thing in a 'morning' - I have ben called out to an alarm call at work at 3am and heard them then, one morning after we were robbed and the door was hanging off, while waiting near the gaping hole the time flew by listening to the Robins and Blackbirds.

For a group of birds, it has to be the House Sparrows in the back garden, they start off with one or two little whispering calls then they short of break out into a mass chatter and I absolutely ADORE it!
