Hello we had a robin nest of 6 chicks in our house where a brick was missing. A magpie has tragically swooped down and taken (I think) all but 1 this evening at sunset. We have put a little bit of wire over the opening so the magpie can’t take the last one but the mum robin can still get in. However, we haven’t seen the mum since this evenings incident and are worried it’s abandoned its nest especially now as there’s foreign wire on the outside that she didn’t put there. How can we help this last little robin, we think it’s around 7 days old with some feathers. Should we try and take it out the nest and put it in a box and bring it in? Or should we leave it in the cavity (it’s a south facing wall and is still warm to the touch) please let me know as I’m really worried about this little bird. :( any advice would be much appreciated
Hi Emily-Rose, always a tragic thing to have happen, no matter what species of bird. Mum may have been spooked and abandoned the nest after the attack, or it may be that she came back to the one still left but as the wire is now there, which I understand you were trying to help by doing this, she may have abandoned it because of that. Don't take it out and bring it in, mum may come back? Nature is cruel but sadly we have to take the good with the bad. Wait and see if others offer advice.
