I understand that bluetits use leaves to line their nests for antibacterial or anti-insect properties. But our bluetits seem to be doing something different. The female is visiting the nest box and I believe nest building now, i have seen her with beakfuls of moss etc. She then exits the box to the rowan opposite, trims off one of the fresh leaves and flies off into the hedge with it. I have seen this behaviour repeated several times. Wondering if it is carrying it off to forage for insects in the frond somewhere with better cover away from the nest? Or is it a courtship behaviour? It isn't being taken into the nest box.
