Sick/Injured Collared Dove *GRAPHIC IMAGE*

Hello,

not an expert here, just like to feed the garden birds.

Recently, just the past few days, we have noticed a ill/sick looking collared dove. It is always alone, it looks ill and its feathers look strange, it’s I appear sore, and it quite often falls asleep on branches or bird tables/feeding trays.

It appears to be eating fine, it flies fine, and it seems aware enough, but it does look sick.

We are trying our best to keep it away from the other garden birds in case the others get sick too. We can’t figure out what’s wrong with it and if it is I contagious thing, is it something that the bird can get treated for, is it too late for it, any advice on what we should do?

thanks

Nik

p.S - have considered calling a vet or rspca for help/advice but I’d reckon they’d need me to have caught it first. Have went out to see how close/feasible it would be to perhaps get it into a shoe box etc, but as I said, it is well aware of surroundings and flys away.

  • Poor dear. There are plenty of rescue groups who will help but the area is key. I can only recommend groups in the south.
  • Am not too sure there are plenty rescue centres that would help right now due to the bird flu situation so general rule would be to stop feed just incase it is transmissible to other birds...as cruel as it sound . Hopefully others may have a better idea than me

Thanks Linda - well I am Scottish too, so I defos heard the accent! I’m in the south Lanarkshire area just if you had heard of any groups for advice.
  • In reply to NiKNak:

No worries am across the Clyde in North. Its bad enough for folk trying to report dead birds never mind sick ones the now...sspca will no doubt just euthenise should they come out!

  • Doves are not particularly susceptible to the current strain and most of the rescues I know are still taking them.
  • Just an update, I had no luck finding any groups etc that could help, other than the SSPCA, so I called them and they said they’d be more than happy to come out and inspect the birds symptoms, regardless if I had managed to catch it or not. Alas, since making that call a few days ago, the wee dove hasn’t been around any of the neighbours garden nor mine. Hoping it’s still to visit us so some help can come out, but we’ll keep looking out for it
  • In reply to NiKNak:

Thanks for the update NiKNak...you done all you could....hopefully it will just be recovering somewhere quiet and be back visiting you soon ;-)

  • Poor thing and we all can only hope for the best, NikNak, and as you say keep a look out for it in your area.
