Suet Block Feeder Which Is Starling Proof

Hi All, can anyone recommend a suet block feeder that prevents Starlings from getting at the suet blocks?

I've had to purchase cages to go over all my current seed and peanut feeders to prevent the starlings from getting at the food so only the small birds can eat it.

I get a number of small birds in my garden (Robin, Gold Finch, Blue Tits, Great Tits) but they get scared off by the Starlings who seem to stop by in large numbers acting like savages.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Dave K

    No such thing IMO.

If you've got that number of starlings it would suggest you may have a large starling roost in your locality. Seek that out and watch the associated murmuration (dawn and dusk). It is hard not to wonder at the sight.
  • You might already know this, Dave, but the species you want to feed are doing very well in UK, and the ones you want to keep out are declining rapidly. I accept most people who feed birds aren't doing it for conservation reasons, but it's only right to point out the population trends when people often ask about keeping starlings away.
  • If only we could pick and choose which birds we wanna feed ;-)

    Hiya

It's more down to avoiding problems with the neighbours to be honest.

I moved into my house in May 2021, i started putting out feeders etc for all the birds but i ended up getting into an argument with one of the neighbours. They were angry with the amount of bird droppings on their side of the wooden fence...mainly due to the flocks of starlings coming into my garden.

He took it upon himself to put up those long metal spikes along the wooden fence that we share without even discussing it with me even though i'm responsible for repairing or replacing the fencing.

To avoid any further issues and given i haven't lived here long, i've ended up caging off all my seed feeders etc to prevent attracting Starlings to my garden. Since i've done this i've had no more neighbourly disputes.
