A tricky one, there are many possibilities from natural predation to rodent control, even a combination of more than one possibility.
Is the woodland owned and managed by a private owner, public owner (ie council) or a conservation trust?
If its owned and managed by a conservation trust, you may try contacting them and sharing your observations, if anyone else, I doubt you'd get any response.
