We have Swifts that nest each year under the roof, but this year there is one still flying in and out when all the rest have gone. Do Swifts sometimes stay or has this one been left behind and possibly in trouble?

I'm not able to answer your query, other than to say I've just seen a swift here, and I'm located to the east of Birmingham, that is my first sighting since 4th August, which is around the time I'd expect them to migrate, though the weather here has been far from insect friendly, so I'm totally surprised to have seen one.
As it is flying, I'm tempted to think it is ok, and just building up the energy to start that long haul south.
If I'm wrong, I'm sure, and I hope, someone will correct me.
