Blackbird with swollen red eyes

One of the regular blackbirds in our garden has two swollen red eyes - probably infected. It looks like she’s losing her vision - and can barely see food in front of her. I think, sadly, she might not last much longer.

Any diagnosis? Could it be transmittable to other birds?

  • Possibly mycoplasma..

  • In reply to Robbo:

Thanks. Poor thing just got attacked by another and left with eye hanging out. If we see it again, may need to put it out of its misery. (Any advice on that welcome...)
  • I don’t know enough about mycoplasma, if it is that, but think the rival was a bit foolish attacking it. Could come unstuck. Many years ago….almost a lifetime ago, I remember a spade being considered a humane way of ‘putting to sleep’ mangled wildlife cats left lying around. I am not recommending that though! Not sure what is quicker than that though.
