Why is the dunnock in our garden always following a female blackbird ?? I’m thinking it’s either after food or is trying to keep the two robins away that often chase it. Any ideas ?

  • Hi Lindy, both blackbirds and dunnocks tend to forage on the ground and will be looking for food, picking through leaf litter, etc., to look for bugs/insects. As the blackbird searches the dunnock may be picking up anything the blackbird misses. Being much colder the birds need to keep their topping up their energy levels so finding extra food is vital at this time of year.
