Magpies and my lawn

We've lived in our house for over 14 years and over the last two months or so, our lawn is being destroyed by Magpies. They've being picking at it and we now have large patches of holes some couple of inches wide and a half inch deep. These things are a menace- I've spent years making the lawn look nice. I wonder if this is linked to the pandemic perhaps and a lack of fast food for them to find. It's not been especially cold or anything. The funny thing is is that my neighbour to one side has it far worse and for longer, it's been going on for about six months for her and my other neighbour has seen no such attack. the only thing I can see if that they seem to attack those parts near mossy bits...my front lawn with no mossy parts hasn't been attacked at all.

Any thoughts?
