ducks in my garden

For a while now we have had a pair of mallard ducks come to our back garden, we have fed them bread every day and they just sit there throughout the day in the sun. Today while in the garden we found a single egg underneath some leaves where there are a few shrubs and plants. We do not have a pond or water body in our garden. They fly somewhere else every night leading us to believe that they are nesting elsewhere. If the egg is theirs, would the female have abandoned the one egg? Should we wait and see if she lays more? What should we do to protect the egg from potential predators?
