Birds nest inside chimney breast

I think I had a birds nest on top of my chimney that has now fallen in. Some twigs and paper fell out the bottom of the grate and I can see more twigs stuck in the flue. I can also hear tweeting in the chimney breast. There are occasional bits falling down and out the grate. I'm not sure what to do.

Should I just leave it or start pulling the twigs and see what comes with it?

  • Hi Lollipop,        birds like Jackdaws often like to build nests inside chimney stacks and typical nesting base nesting material is twigs.     Once nest building has commenced it becomes protected under the Wildlife & Countryside Act(1981)   There is some advice on THIS LINK which may be of some assistance;   it is quite early in the season so there should be no chicks yet otherwise I think it would be a case for the rspca for their help/or advice.     In our previous home we had cowlings fitted to the top of the chimney preventing birds from nesting so may be a good idea to do this once the breeding season is over.
