Empty black bird nest

We have been avidly watching as a black bird was building her nest in a Camilla bush right outside our back door. With the two of us, two kids (and friends) and a dog constantly in and out she obviously felt safe enough to build it there. However over the last couple of days there has been no sight of her. A very light football, the plastic ones, hit the bush and whilst it did not disturb the nest I wonder if that's it? Do birds often abandon practically complete nests because they have been disturbed? Or is it sadly more likely that something happened to her? If she did abandon do you think she would go on to build another nest and still have eggs this spring? My kids love wildlife and are worried about her.

Thank you for any help anyone can give.
