I think I have just seen a Red Kite soaring over our garden near Newark in Nottinghamshire. Could this be possible??
Hi Grumpy Old Man (great name I can relate to that)
Welcome to the forum. Can't say for certain but it's perfectly possible. There's been a reintroduction progromme at Rockingham Forest in Northamptonshire which is not that far from Newark as the kite flies so to speak.
Here's a photo of one flying above my house in berkshire to help with ID.
Regards TJ

Thanks for that T J. I only had time to grab the binoculars so unable to get a snapshot. It was the shape of the tail that made me think of the Kite.
Tks again

Definitely no reason for it not to be a kite if it looked like one. I saw one a couple of months back between Stamford & Grantham, when I was travelling up the East Coast mainline - so thats putting them pretty close to Newark

Hi Grumpy Old Man
On Wednesday 23 June on returning home from Fineshade Wood part of Rockingham Forest via Gretton Northamptonshire, I saw a red kite flying just above the trees above me. I stopped the car to have a look and to my amazement I counted 6 just sailing above the trees - fantastic sight!

Thanks. I am now fairly certain it was a kite after the responses I received.
First welcome to the site.
I think by the way you are talking it must have been a red kite. They have that type of effect when you see them in an area for the first.
I have had four sighting down here in Kent in the last few weeks.

P.S. Great picture TJ.
Hi Robert
Thanks for the welcome and the info. Will now keep my eyes peeled for them. I have seen them when staying with friends in Broadstairs and in Torquay but this is my first sighting so far north.
I have just seen a Red Kote fly over our house. We live near the British Sugar Factory in Newark
Absolutely. I farm not too far from Newark & we regularly have red kites over head.
I really hope we have more sighting. I'll keep looking
