How about a extra £ to RSPB

Had this thought, seeing as the RSPB keen to get into other wildlife etc to attract more subs and lots of people commenting on badgers and loads signing petitions if we all members agreed to send a £ to RSPB to fund a vaccination program at least we would be doing something positive and there should be in theory as long as people love badgers over a million £.

  • Hi

as usual Sooty comes out of left field with a potentially over the top controversial idea that I like!

For advice about Birding, Identification, field guides,  binoculars, scopes, tripods,  etc - put 'Birding Tips'   into the search box

  • This is a good idea but surely it will have to be donated to the ministry, and not adding to the R.S.P.B.,s busy work load and will have to be properly accounted for .??

    Less we forget

  • Sooty, I like that idea.  I see the RSPB are going to vaccinate badgers on their reserve in the Forest of Dean.

  • I did see that some group in Shropshire and nearby were vaccinating as well. These things just need some organising and most of publicity, comments, signatures etc are all negative.I take my hat off to those being positive and doing something if there was more of it there is a lever to stop the cull and see if vaccination will do the same job.

  • Reckon this is a great idea Sooty, surprised there has not been more response to you thread

    Pete

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • I`d donate too.Co-ordinated effort between rspb & wildlife trust.org.needed.Children in need aka `pay what you feel at the end of the meal`type of campaign is a good start.Long term funding,I feel however, must come from central government.

  • Having thought further and thinking about all the sort of controversy,in-fighting call it what you will.I have seen Brian May who comes up with lots of sense but also one complete piece of unnecessary piece of rubbish about 9 out of every 10 badgers by roadside in south west are really killed by farmers.Except for that he seems committed to the cause.I see he is now RSPCA Vice President and surely the RSPCA are in a position to co- ordinate a serious campaign of fund raising putting pressure on the government by saying if we raise money for vaccination will you give it a chance.

How about most of us could afford £10,only half a month mobile contract I guess.

Over 100,000 signatures on petition at £10 =£1 million

RSPB even £1 each =£1 million

Instead of farmers funding cull lets ask for£1 million

Surely if it was a serious fund raising it would be justified asking Government for£1 million as if they have less compensation to pay out they would be winners as well

Ask badger groups for £1 million.

Now if only Brian May organised something like this £5 million I understand would buy 250,000 doses of vaccine.

Maybe pie in the sky but it is one way of clearing cattle and badgers if everybody serious enough and the vaccine effective.

What I find the worse thing is nobody seems to be making a serious alternative to a pilot cull that is unlikely to be very effective and to be effective I believe the cull would have to so severe it will never happen, leaving just more misery for badgers, cattle and farmers and of course upsetting with the thoughts of cull for the general public.

  • Why then dont you start either a petition or a fund through just giving as been an ex farmer seem to be in the best position to know both sides of the coin, and as you have said before it is a serious thing but not just a case of oh poor badger, but putting forward a serious case for an alternative, the only thing about fund raising it has to be done to strict rules to safeguard both the giver and the receiver.

    Less we forget

  • Skipper, you must know from what you say that RSPCA are far more capable than me for doing such a thing.I would be described as a real PC novice anyway.Have not even bought even one thing on internet, doing it through children

Think yours is a bit of a mischievous comment from the first serious alternative to the cull I have seen offered.

The easiest thing in the world is to be against something and signing a petition means nothing to me unless you are prepared to back it up with cash.

  • Only thing I disagree with is the exhorbitant fee you are paying for cell phone-  I only pay £10 a month for unlimited text and 400 mins anyway
