As you may be aware, the Badger Trust recently lost its appeal against the judgment given by Lord Justice Ouseley in July in respect of the Judicial Review made against the Government’s decision to hold a pilot trial of the free-shooting of badgers in parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire. This is clearly not the outcome they were hoping for. If, like me you feel passionate about this and would like to add your voice to the petition to get this cull stopped, then please click on the link below:http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/38257

Ian thank you, well at least you have allowed me to continue and a couple of points from your comments would be.
Do not think any sensible farmer denies we have on farms a certain amount of cattle to cattle spread of BTB once it is in that particular herd after all if someone with TB was living with other people there would be a great chance some of those would catch it.
The bio-security is not as simple as they offer up as it is only relevant to the portion of time cattle are in buildings approx half a year in most cases.
The big problem is the other 6 months of year when cattle out at grass and it is practically impossible to keep badgers out of fields where they urinate on grass cattle will eat and also probably less of a problem leave open latrines all round the outside of fields.
Hi Sooty, I think you have made your point. I've had to remove your last post as it was verging on a personal attack and that's just not on.
With regards to the bio-security research I linked, it acknowledges the point you make that in-field contact with urine/faeces is a potential source of badger to cattle transfer but it also highlights the glaring need to add measures to prevent contact between badgers and cattle in farm buildings. The study also mentions in the introduction that studies have looked at trying to reduce contact whilst free grazing but that there was little knowledge about how effective bio-security measures around farm yards and buildings were at reducing badger and cattle interactions, even though there is now a great deal of evidence to show this is potentially a substantial source of disease transmission.
The findings of the study showed very clearly that these measures can reduce badger activity and therefor will reduce the risk of infection from badgers to the cattle.

Ian,sorry and in hindsight can see it was perhaps as you say but still strange he describes himself as a dairy farmer in the cull area and Brian May described him as a former dairy farmer.Unfortunately there are so many statements that can be seen as anti farmer that just must be untrue and one was where Brian May stated that 9 out of every 10 dead badgers by south west roadsides were killed by farmers and put by roadside.Rather reduces the respect I otherwise have for him as he must have lots of good points.
Cannot believe anyone would seriously think farmer would put badgers in truck or similar and in the middle of night dispose of badgers by the side of a road, how suspicious and if the police around at that time of night easy catch of criminal activity with no excuse. No it would be just too easy to bury them in lots of places on the farm.
