The Lake District National Park Authority plan to cull by shooting up to 200 Canada geese this Spring

I am devastated and horrified, as are many local people at the L.D.N.P.A. proposal to shoot up to 200 Canada geese this Spring whilst they are nesting. The usual reasons are trotted out like "they pollute the area and the lake with droppings" well most local people know that the main pollution in Windermere comes from sewage and the multitude of craft on the lake. Other reasons include "grazing on grass where there are sheep" and "damaging reed beds". Another good one "they are non native species" So folks are these valid reasons to kill these beautiful creatures.

    Ooooh . .  I love a conspiracy theory !

    Someone wants to spend thousands of pounds , and create a public outcry , just to satisfy someone's whim , eh ?

    The LDNPA claim to have tried egg oiling and found it ineffective, strange really when it has worked in other areas or am I subscribing to another conspiracy theory.

    Twitchy,I doubt if the figures in the local bird records will have been inflated as they are collected by local club birders like you and me with no axe to grind not any government  controlled body.Good luck if you do your own count it will be one heck of a task.

    Thanks again but I'm still of a mind to do it, even I should be able to tell the difference between 600 and 1200, I suppose it can only be an estimate since the birds are not static.

    To get back on track I do hope the LDNPA have a change of heart and opt for non lethal methods to manage the Geese.

    Are there any thoughts on the effect the shooting of nesting Geese might have on tourism- it is hardly a great advertisement for the area that on the one hand promotes its wildlife when the other hand is on the trigger of a gun.

    There will be numerous demonstrations against the cull in the tourist "hotspots"its something of a star cause with many groups concerned with animal welfare.
