Community poll - Environmental laws under attack - how concerned are you?

Earlier today the Chancellor made some rather worrying comments about the UK Habitats Regulations that are key to protecting the important wildlife sites, have a read of our press release in response to his comments here.

What does everyone think about these comments?

  • Reckon this could be a case of the countryside and its wildlife getting the mucky end of the stick as usual. We must voice our concerns by supporting the relevant societies fighting against this.

Birding is for everyone no matter how good or bad we are at it,enjoy it while you can

  • If you are as shocked and disappointed as we are, read Martin Harpers blog here, please step up for nature and write to your MP expressing why the Habitats Regulations are so important to you. You can find some guidance on our website here, there is also a link to help you find your local MP.

If you enjoy the natural spaces the UK has to offer, maybe a local park or nature reserve or an area of green space in the urban jungle, or maybe you have a nice local walk through greenbelt, all of these habitats could now be under threat. We want to hear why you think it is important to protect these sites for wildlife, for you and for the future generations.

Please let us know what you think to this and please write to your MP.

    Thank and best wishes

  • I've been brutally honest and voted for mildly concern as I'm not sure how the changes affect me, which is true... i've not had much time to read about the implications of the Chancellors speech yet.

I've written to my MP in the past about environmental concerns and had a venomous reply, so i'm a bit reluctant to do it again.

  • Some interesting media articles about the Chancellors comments over the weekend, have a look here and here

For the latest RSPB opinions on this have a look at Martin Harpers blog

  • I have now voted as mildly concerned regarding this topic.

My understanding (which could be wrong) is that DEFRA will be reviewing the impact of the EU Habitats Directive etc in England and Wales only. Is that a correct interpretation?
