Hi, I’m mostly looking for a bit of advise. Today neighbours at the back of our house cut down two massive sycamores that have been in that garden for as long as I can remember (the trees do belong to them as they are on their land) I’m really upset and angry, as not only were the trees really old and well developed, but were also a hub for a lot of our local wildlife. We have a family of grey squirrels, tons of small birds (robins, tits, etc) lots of jackdaws, pigeons, and I’ve even seen a woodpecker and some ringneck parakeets. I’m now worried about the wildlife in the area going forward, and was wondering if anyone had any advise on encouraging the birds and squirrels back into our garden, and if there are any plants or trees that we could plant ourselves, to help replenish what’s been lost.
- Beth (currently crying over trees)
This sort of thing is always upsetting. I suggest replacing the wildlife value of these trees by planting some berry-producing bushes and trees in your garden. Rowans are good, so are cottoneaster (great for bees too), and honeysuckle. It will take a bit of time for these to mature, but the birds will be back if you provide the things they need.
That’s great, thank you. I’ll look into which would be a good fit for our garden <3
