Garganey Ducks

Hi all,

I saw this pair at the weekend, I assumed they were Mallards and took the pictures for practice. When I looked at them this morning, I could'nt ID them and pulled out an old book on nature of the British Isles and believe that they are Garganey ducks? I haven't seen them before around here (north Wilts) and thought they would be interesting to share.

  • Hi Pete and welcome to the Community
I've had a close look at the photo and I think they are pair of Mandarin Ducks - female leading and male behind. The characteristic broad white band over the eye shows clearly on the male and if you look closely you can see a smaller one on the female
I can see why you thought Garganey but the white eyebrow is in the wrong place and the bill looks far too short.
Feel free to wait for further opinions

  • Tony,

Thanks for the information, having looked up Mandarins in flight, I think you are right. They look a lot more fancy when they are on the ground, in flight they are a lot more slick.

  • Nice photos anyway, Pete, even if they are not what you hoped for.
