Loch of Kinnordy

Today 15/10/09 was my first visit. It is a very nice site well kept all the paths and walkways maintained. Three good hides. Again because of the recent good weather no Whooper Swans YET! I am assured by the very helpful staff there that they do have large numbers each winter. So I will return soon.

One or two  of todays sightings.  I should of said this on each RSPB site thread I've started but please all photos from this site by other people are welcome, as on all other.

Goosander

Mute swans

Wren

Mallard (f)

Buzzard

Widgeon

Teal

LOng-tailed Tit

John

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Hi all, I returned to the Loch on 29/10/09. Hoping for the Bittern shot! not getting :-((. never mind had a nice few hours all the same.

(again will not upload full view?)  Had to crop half off!

The little Wren came to say hello again! (maybe telling me where to go)

    Goldeneye (saw 4 in all)

Half a dozen Shoveler dropped in.

Teal Dropping in all over the place! (100 ish)

    Wigeon (over a dozen)

On the far side of the lock the Hen harrier (f) hunting. Never quite close enough to do the view justice!

I hope the Photo's help to recreate the moment for you. It was a very nice day. Plenty of other birdies on show

I probably don't need to say this, but I will return!!!

    John :-)

    hi John

I have overllooked this wonderful thread, John

Your captures of the birds doing whey do best are a joy to see - being birds

Your photos are baeutiful indeed and the scenary is out of this world.

As for the Hen Harrier that is just an amazing shot as the bird is so rare now.

    Look forward to seeing more in the future. (thumbs up}

    Regards

    Kathy and Dave

  • Super pics John.  Especially like the teal with it's relection.  I haven't been able to photograph a wren yet, I just get lovely shots of where the wren had been before I pressed the shutter!  Good to see the hen harrier too.  Looks like you had a good time.

There is something new to learn everyday...

  • Thanks all! Sarum Bat, I had the same trouble with Wrens until this little chap. s/he just roars at me, if you can say a Wren roars! Very brave little thing and I am in debt to it!

  • SB - I get that with a lot of birds!

John - wonderful photos. I'd never have guessed you would be going back though.....  ☺☺☺

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Its a dirty job! But I will try to force myself to do it. :-) thanks Squirrel.

  • Stunning photos of the hen harrier!  I still haven't seen her yet but I'll be at the reserve next week so maybe I'll be lucky!

  • For those of you wanting to get 'shots' (photographic of course) of hen harrier, Kinnordy is the place to try at the moment. Three were seen on Thursday, and then 2 for most of the rest of the day. Two were around yesterday as well, probably roosting on site.

If you hang around til dusk there are a couple of thousand starlings roosting in the reeds to the left of the Gullery hide.

First Whoopers came in yesterday, but went off again.

Great to hear!  I might stop off there on Saturday see if I get to see them!
