Vane Farm RSPB

It was Heron day 19/09/09, not official, after trying for so long to get close to one without spooking it. I was surrounded by them, all trying to pick a fight with the nearest one.

Does anyone know if this is an annual event?

For once I wished for my small lens, in the pool in front of me, was eight to twelve at a time, picking on each other!

Sorry that I never got a large group photo to share. I was so wrapped up in events and not having small lens never helped. Any knowledge would be welcomed!

For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

  • Today 17/10/09, Very cold start, just me and one lone Heron waiting for the sun to climb above the hill and warm things, mainly me, up I must add! Here are one or two of todays sightings.

    Curlew

It was a stand off for a few minutes but the Heron eventually did the sensible thing!

    Buzzard

The Pink-footed Geese are on another thread.

It was very surprising not to see any Ducks today, I heard a Widgeon but that was it. mind you it was cold and I left early to warm up!!!

  • Cracking photos John. Please don't tell him / her but when I first looked I thought that heron was knock-kneed!!!

    Squirrel

The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.

The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!

  • Lol Squirrel!

Gorgeous pics again John! I love those sorts of mornings! Cold but well worth it!!

  • Thanks Squirrel / Marjus.  Today 26/10/09 it was very quiet again not a single duck in the pools, plenty out on the Loch. Something keeping them out of the pools, very odd, last two visits the same!

One good thing today my first shots of Whoopers! Not as close as the Greenshank/Herons but still my first. :-)

    The family.

    Steady ...steady.

    Quality landing Dear!

Beep beep! .... Sorry can't help myself, you need to be old enough to understand! .. and no road anyway

  • Lovely photos again John. I adore the one of the swan running across the water - great action shot.

  • Ditto! I agree with that! Super set again!

Hope it isn't 'Wile E. Coyote' that's keeping everything out of the pool John!! ;-)
