Had a fantastic walk around Ham Wall near Glastonbury this afternoon with the wife and the dog. Wall-to-wall sunshine and 18°C,not too shabby for April!
The highlight of the day was the marsh harriers. We spotted four females at quite a distance, then a bit further along the trail a magnificent male harrier rose up out of the reed beds no more than 50 yards away from us! I didn't realise how big these birds are until I saw this one close up!
Other spots on the walk were great egret, little egret, shoveler, Blackcap, and a little wren sitting in a bush about 4 feet away from me, singing its heart out! I didn't realise such a small bird could be so loud! We also heard a woodie drumming quite close but couldn't catch sight of it.
I'm a wanderer.
Sounds a super day Albert. Got to say, we like Ham Wall too Was there much insect life about yet?
A fair amount, clouds of midges, quite a few butterflies and a few dragonflies. It's still early doors!
sounds like a really lovely and rewarding walk with lovely birds seen, nice to get some decent sunny weather for a change so get back out there before it changes !!!
