Who wants to guess where I've been?

I've just got back from a week away. For anyone who wants to guess/work out where I was, I'll post a series of photo clues... here is clue 1:

PS - some of you already know where I went but please don't give the game away :)

  • Perhaps even Sri Lanka. I know you can do Blue Whale watching from there but I don't know about Orca.

  • Ceylon, or near there ?? lovely pictures and that cobra is brilliant, would have loved to have seen that, glad you had a great holiday.

    To each their own

  • Previous post crossed with, aiki's. I had to cheat - the Purple-faced Monkey is endemic to Sri Lanka so that's my final answer and I don't need to phone a friend. LOL

  • Yes :) Sri Lanka it was. Aka Ceylon, or Serendib. Brilliant place, so full of approachable wildlife that I didn't know where to point the camera first. The Killer Whale was a stroke of luck, not often seen from the whale-watching trips (which are, as TeeJay says, primarily for Blue Whale - we saw one of those too).

  • Oh wow!! You've already given us a fabulous selection of shots! Can't wait to see more! :-)

  • Oh, better ID the species in the clues.

    1) Cattle Egret. V common in SL, but it has a very extensive global distribution.

    2) Killer Whale or Orca, again very widepsread.

    3) Peregrine Falcon of the subspecies peregrinator, found in the Indian subcontinent and also known as 'Shaheen'. But difficult to tell it's this subspecies in a top-down view. If seen from below it shows very rich russet underparts.

    4) Little Green Bee-eater. Widespread in Africa and Asia, but you'd probably need a clearer photo to see the browny tinge that IDs it as the subspecies orientalis, found in India and Sri Lanka.

    5) Brahminy Kite. Found on the Indian subcontinent but also further east, to Australia.

    6) Indian Cobra. Indian subcontinent only.

    7) Purple-faced Langur aka Purple-faced Leaf Monkey. Endemic to Sri Lanka :)

  • Aiki, you're amazing.  You're like a walking encyclopedia of wildlife!

Our herring gulls are red listed birds.  Think about that the next time you hear some flaming idiot calling for a cull of them.

  • Superb! Thanks Aiki! Was going to ask about the raptor's ID but we've got that and more! :-)

  • I've heard it's a fabulous place for birds. I've often looked at the brochures but won't make it there now. Long way from my first guess but we got there eventually.

Thanks for all the photos so far and for the raptor ID - I wouldn't have got that one.

  • I found this post after the location had been answered, but it was still fun working it out!

You mention subspecies for some of the other photos, but not this one - Cattle Egrets are widely distributed, but the very extensive buff on the head an neck point towards this one being the eastern subspecies, coromandus, (although it's not as 'orangey' as they can be in full breeding plumage). This restricts the area to south-east Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and perhaps northern Australia (although they don't breed in Australia - as far as I know).

I tried to work out the Peregrine subspecies, but couldn't say that it was definitely perigrinator!

I expect that you found yourself a few nice dragonflies on your trip as well as the other wildlife - any pics of those?  ;o)
