Epais Naturals delta del Lobregat, Barcelona, Spain - visited April 2016

Fantastic amount of birdlife and others despite being directly under the flight path for the airport and planes so low you feel like you're ducking every couple of minutes! !

Not reachable by public transport. We went on our last day, headed to the airport early and hired a car for the day from there. It's only about 15minutes from the airport (unless you get lost like us and eventually called into a local hotel who gave us a local map and directions!) though isn't signposted until you are nearly there. Only had about 4 hours there in total and so only visited one site but ion the map there was another section at the otherside of the airport.

  • No, I've never been there. Most of my birding trips to Spain have been to Extremadura or down south in Andalucia.
Spain is always good for birds especially their wetlands. Nice variety on a short trip, KO1. Good to get a Purple Heron flyby.

  • Very nice set KO1, always lovely to see some different species including the Swallowtail butterfly.

  • I wasn't sure if the sandy coloured bird was a Squacco heron?? There were Little Egrets there too and it was bigger than them but smaller than a grey heron. It was quite distant so didn't get a clear image of it.

Yes indeed, it's a Squacco,.nice looking birds with their sandy plumage. Funny thing is when they fly they look white.
