I'm sitting here looking proudly at my new purchase. A camera. I can't believe I've actually done this, but I am so envious of all the superb photos on this forum and in the galleries that I couldn't possibly emulate with my Coolpix.
After some research on the internet, advice from a friend, and then the coincidental thread started by Littleowl earlier today, I went out and bought a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 18x. We are lucky to have a photographic retailer locally that is very competitive on price. I paid £249 for it, which I think is an excellent price, and the friendly and obliging retailer is on hand should I need help or if it goes wrong. He recommended this particular camera for a technophobe like me who wants an automatic point and shoot with a good zoom.
I now have to read the instructions. Don't hold your breath for any pictures just yet!!
Cheers, Linda.

Excellent, I'm like you for backing up my pictures, they are to precious to lose aren't they, we back ours up on a portable hard drive, but I'm even more paranoid than that, I back them up on discs and give them to relatives as well, I said to my OH if we ever had a fire we would lose the lot, thats the one thing you often here said when people have a fire, I don't care about the possesions its the Photos we can never get those back.
There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed.
Hi BBB,
I do the same. I not only have my own photos but hundreds of beautiful Victorian ones that couldn't be replaced. They are on my pen drives and also a DVD at my friend's house!
Hi all,
On the subject of storage, you may be interested in this:-

I am going to get one as it has a massive amount of storage on it and is portable. This is the best price I have found for it, so far. What I like is that it is simply "plug and play" - no software to set up!!!
The necessity of bird-watching is a really good reason for avoiding all forms of housework.
The dust will still be there tomorrow - the birds may not be!
Hi Squirrel,
Thanks for that link. I'll show it to hubby. He builds computers from scratch and may know about it but failed to tell me!
All photos restored to their folders and all is well with the world this morning!

Phew! That's a relief. It will be okay for you to re-install the software as it probably has editing features on it that you will find useful but I'd stick to the Windows Autoplay option for importing pictures as you know you can't go wrong with that. Enjoy practising with your new camera today!
Hi everyone,
This is my very first attempt at a bird. I did try to get the nasal hair for Buzzard. This is a MALE goldfinch taken through a window. Cropped too much but it is my first effort!
Well done Sparrow, you'll have to do what you told me now, get your arctic gear on and sit in the garden, It's snowing AGAIN here now.
Wowee!!!!!!! Fabulous Sparrow - very well done indeed. It's a brilliant photo. (I wonder if Buzzard will say it might be female just to wind you up LOL)
I can't wait to see more now......
Beautiful shot - well done
The crop button is a necessary part of photograph taking,
So no worries there.

Kathy and Dave
