The hardest part of photographing this extremely patient dragonfly was to find it and get it in frame. It was a tiny target against a very cluttered background.
I normally get a subject in frame by lining up the top of the camera's hot shoe with the top of the Sigma lens's hood, leaving about a half inch gap. Problem - it only works for objects several tens of yards away. Not a tiny dragonfly 15 feet away. Light conditions were overcast but bright. Can't win them all.
90% luck, 5% field craft, 5% camera skills.

Back out in the garden today. Managed to snap this lovely dragonfly. I think it is a "Ruddy Darter". If not, hopefully someone will identify it.

it’s been quiet on the dragonfly front. Fairly sure this is a common darter. But could be wrong.
