Well it was a long way off - the first photo is the un-croppped image with 600mm equivalent lens - and the second severe cropping but it's only the second time I've ever seen one, though have been hearing them regularly recently...
The cropped image is clear enough to see it is a cuckoo, and the camera seems to have well to focus on it.
Wildlife can be awkward to photograph at the best of times, you'll know the old saying, never work with animals or children....
