Fieldfares & redwings

Has anyone seen any yet? I often see flocks of them flying over our rural office in the autumn / winter but not spotted any yet!

Can't wait for them to arrive in Shropshire! Determined to get decents pics of them this year!!

  • We've had small numbers of Fieldfare in our average sized garden on the edge of the New Forest feeding on apples that I've left out on the rare occasions when we've had snow, but they've always been quite nervous and the sight of me at the window has spooked them and they've been off.  However since we had the overnight snow on the 7th January a single individual has taken up residence in and around our garden.  He (I'll say 'he' for the sake of convenience) is not so easily spooked, and even the sight of me in full view with my lens pressed up against the window is not enough to scare him off.  He has been vigorously defending 'his' apples against the Blackbirds, Song Thrushes, and other Fieldfares that dare to come too close for comfort.  It's been a real pleasure watching him over the past few days, and I'm really going to miss him when he finally decides to leave!

  • I have been lucky enough this year to get some redwings in my garden and thought I would share my photo of them.  I live in Kent and it is a first for me seeing them in my garden.

  • Hi,

I just wanted to mention a piece about fieldfares on the BBC News website today, it is at:    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/8457214.stm

Apparently there are loads in Suffolk at the moment!

    Cheers,

    Alastair
