  • Blimey! It's all rather complicated isn't it!!! Think I'll stick to appreciating them whatever their sex as it's ok referring to all this info with a photo to hand but trying to just remember it.... I admire anyone (Buzzard!!) that can retain all this information! It's enough for me to try to remember all the different species!! Lol!!

  • Buzzard, i would just love to spend time following you around on one of your walks. You are such a 'mine of information' and so willing to share your knowledge. A big thank you from me.

I am learning all the time from this wonderful forum. A few months ago I had never seen a goldfinch of any sex, and when the first one appeared in my garden I had to get my book out to make sure it was what I thought it was.

Sparrow my point exactly. Think what you know now! to what you knew a few months ago!

My knowledge spans a fair few decades, so incomparison what you have learnt in a few months is brilliant.

The key thing is to enjoy what you are doing, learn a few things at a time. Try to memorise what you have learnt and test yourself.

Use your reference books at every chance you have, to think when I started there were no computers or internet . Everything was learnt from text books and elders who shared they're knowledge.

Also my own determination to learn about these amazing animals was a driving force, and I'm still learning now.

If you are trying to do things you are not happy doing and  it stops your enjoyment then I would suggest what others are doing.

The message I'm getting is your very keen and determined to learn, also you seem to be very passionate about the birds you have attracted to your garden!

    Regards Buzzard

    Hi,

I have a feeling that Goldfinches are sexable on bill size and shape- it may be an adaptation for feeding on different plant spp.

    Hi,

    Pied Wagtails in winter :)

Male PW - have black crown and nape, and black mantle with dark blackish smudge on the breast side below the breast band.

Female PW - have black crown and nape, and smoky grey mantles with black mixed in, often heavily on the scapulars, with smoky blackish smudge on the breast side below the breast band.

    Hi,

sexing Great Tits is nice and easy, males are brighter than the females and the belly stripe is wide and goes all the way to the vent. On females, the belly stripe is of  uneven  width and peters out by the vent.

    Hi Buzzard,

It all sounds very difficult for a beginner. Please could you tell me how to sex goldfinches?

Hi Sparrow, I hope you find the following links of some assistance.

The photo in the second link is ideal, a very good close up of both male and female Goldfinches. Showing both methods using the head criteria for sexing.

    Regards Buzzard
