These photos are all of the same bird seen at Dearne Valley this afternoon. I'm just hopeless with birds of prey. Not the best photos - a bit far away for my camera but I'm sure one of you will be able to give me a positive id We thought at first it was a kestrel but now I'm not so sure. Ta.

How do you get adult male? The barring on the tail, as well as it's orange base colour on the upper side and then the brown crown and nape rule that out?
It does look like a female to me too. The barred tail is the most obvious clue.....and can be seen quite clearly.

Well I'll hopefully never mix up my peregrines and my kestrels again. I'm a real novice at birds of prey so it's been great to read all these identifying tips. My next challenge is to get a clearer photo that will stand up to a bit more cropping! Thanks everyone.

Nothing at all wrong with your photo ChristineB I just wanted an enlargement having an interest in Raptors. What a brilliant opportunity you had there plus the blue sky background. Keep it up.
