For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.

the birds are Gadwall. The RH bird appears to be a male in eclipse- the bill pattern fits as does the plain cheek and a tiny amount of white wing flash is visible if you zoom in :)
The LH bird looks good for a female

I agree with Seymour. Size, shape and pattern suggest gadwall, the LH bird is female (clear orange bill edges) and the male on the right is well into eclipse. Judging by the grebe chick this looks like midsummer, so the time of year is right. The only other contender would be mallards, but there are too many features not quite right for mallards.
But that's a tough ID challenge for anyone!
