Caged fat ball feeders = good, mesh bags and fatballs = bad!
Where was this taken and when?
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Sorry John, It was sent in yesterday (01/12/09) and the email correspondance didnt specify location other than that it was in an English country garden :-)

Well there is a Black headed Jay out there! I wonder if you are on the right track susan.
Looks like a Corvid. Hooded Crow perhaps?
This is probably stupid, but it looks like a large tit of some sort to me. One that has been painted a different colour!
Cheers, Linda.
See my photos on Flickr
But then it looks a wee bit small! A bit harsh but without its head it looks like a Great Tit. Perhaps the thing that keeps flashing up is Melanistic Great Tit!
The jay would have more wing marking and the size, they would need to be pretty big fat balls. Great Tit is still flashing up.
No, I'm way off with Jay, OH waving birds of Asia at me and shaking his head in disbelief and asking how many times have you seen a BH Jay on trips to India ? oops, lol - Note he's not coming forward with any suggestions though.
OK, I will have a guess. We were thinking the Wheatear family possibly Humes (Middle East) but that should have a completely black back , not grey as in photograph. It is a long way from home or an escapee.
Quite long stout legs and long tail, quite jay like : ) (back at Jays again) can't see the beak clearly. maybe a HEINZ
