Hi Pete
Welcome to the RSPB Forum
Not an expert here, but some type of Heron comes to mind
Regards
Kathy and Dave
Never seen one, but my field guide suggests it's a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron - should have been on its way to sub-Saharan Africa in Oct though.
Hello Kathy and Dave,
Thanks for the welcome.
You could be right, I was thinking it might be a young Eagret as there was an adult Eagret fishing further up the river.
Best wishes
Pete
Hi Sue
I would have to agree with you. Got a European Bird Book, and had a good look.
It is not from the UK so we know as much as that.
Wonder when the picture was taken.
Can you tell us Pete?
Yes, I'sd say a juvenile night heron. Although they do migrate tyo Africa in Oct/Nov, some apparently over-winter around the Mediterranean.
There is something new to learn everyday...

Hi SB
Thank you for your answer
A positive response to the question, and that what I want to hear.
Got your answer BedfordPete {smile}
Thanks for all the reponses to my picture.
We were in Ibiza in the first week of October this year.
While we were walking along this river I suddenly saw this bird perched on the boat.
I'm not very good at identifying birds so I took a photo and thought I would send it in here.
I have got some photos of an egret which was fishing about 1/2 mile away and wondered whether this could have been its youngster.
I'm with Sue C and SB on this one, Night Heron.
For viewing or photography right place right time is everything. I'd rather be in the right place with poor kit than have the best kit and be in the wrong place.
Welcome to the forum BedfordPete,
just to confirm as some other members have.
This is a great photo of a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron, commonly abbreviated to just Night Heron in Eurasia.

Hi BedfordPete. Great photograph.Having done a quick image search on google, I have to agree that the bird is a juvenile night heron. Having had a quick look at the RSPB Complete Birds of Britain and Europe; this bird occours in localized populations in parts of mainland Europe during the summer months, and is sadly declining.
