Hello,
I hope someone can help. I managed to take a picture of what we think is a goldfinch not very good as its taken through the window. My mum and I are having a debate as to whether it is a female or a juvenile. Does anyone know?
About the Niger seed versus sunflower heart seed (which does the Goldfinch prefer). Definately sunflower seed hearts in my garden but it might come down to the feeder and whether the perches are stirrups or sticks. The Goldfinches have been ignoring the Niger seed feeder but then suddenly, and briefly, when the cold weather set in they decided to have a real go at it for a couple of days before going back onto the sunflower hearts (which were present and replenished all along). I suspect that most birds prefer a hoop or stirrup to perch on. And I don't know, also, why it is that when you put out huskless sunflower hearts - the birds still discard parts?.... Perhaps some species are really fussy and want just the softest parts of the inside?
