Today, in farmland just outside Cambridge, saw a huge flock of woodpigeons take off in fright, and then a bird of prey tackle one at the base of the flock, quite near the ground, and bring it down. It then proceeded to pluck the feathers for quite some time. Unbelievably I'd forgotten my camera SD card, so the video was filmed through binoculars using iPhone, and the photos are of the camera display, taken with iPhone. I'm not sure whether it's a sparrowhawk or goshawk. The strong white supercilium is throwing me... Thank you!
I've probably never seen a goshawk but female sparrowhawk have a supercilium that can be quite striking. Sparrowhawk is far more likely as they are far more common but that's not an ID.
If it helps, a goshawk would be a lot bigger than a woodpigeon. A sparrowhawk would be a little bit smaller.
