What’s this little feller?

Caught this little scamp on the ring security last night - he attacked our familiar hedge hog!
please excuse the state of our garden we’ve just left it to the wildlife for a bit…
probably a rat but could it be a mole?

  • Looks like a water shrew.
  • In reply to ItisaRobbo:

I can see that little long external nose just and no more. Water Shrew are tiny too.

  • I am guessing the hedgehog is quite a small one? If it is a water shrew, hopefully it didn't manage to sink its teeth in as they're meant to be slightly venomous. Size wise, a bit smaller than a mole, but larger than other shrews, which is why I'm suspecting the hedgehog isn't very big.......or my water shrew i.d. is wrong! Wouldn't like to give a different guess though.
  • In reply to ItisaRobbo:

The hedgehog is pretty big actually (we call him a hench-hog lol).
Cat food bowl there for scale (avg size cat food bowl).
Too big to be a water shrew and we can’t see a tail.
Unless it’s another / different coloured hedgehog?
But the fact it’s biting makes me thing not a hedgehog as they head but and barge each other?
We think mole but the image quality is pants sorry!
  • In reply to Sammyswish:

It is not a mole. If you are dismissing water shrew due to size, you are also dismissing moles which aren’t that much bigger than water shrews. The shaking and biting is also clearly not mole. Where are its large front feet?

If that is a large hedgehog, which I am definitely not disputing, I am at a loss as to what it is. It is something that is water shrew coloured.

  • Looks on a bigger screen, it walks like a hedgehog, or dare I say it…..a guinea pig.
