Green caterpillar

Can anyone identify this green Caterpillar curled up on our hellebore? Thanks

  • Nice hellebore. I can't help with the caterpillar, but am suspecting it's lost. Is the hellebore in a pot and has the pot been moved? Hard to imagine that a moth caterpillar, which I'm assuming it is, would be feeding on the hellebore. What plants are nearby, as that may help others?

  • In reply to ItisaRobbo:

Thanks. We bought it about a month ago. Nearby plants are a rose, wisteria, agapanthus, azealia and heuchera. All are in pots as we moved in to a new build last summer and haven't got the garden planted up yet..
What do you think it might be?
  • I have no clue when it comes to caterpillars but hopefully this link may help until an expert can ;-)

  • Could be Angle Shades, could be something entirely different! What is needed to ID is full length pic of top & another of side view showing legs ... likely gone away by now!

Thanks for the extra info. Those plants don't really ring any bells re moth or butterfly caterpillars and it's not a sawfly larvae in your photo. Wendy could well be right. Hopefully it's still around and i.d. can be confirmed now you have a name to lookup.
  • It looks like a noctuid moth of some kind — angle shades seems a reasonable call I reckon. Lots of them are unfussy eaters.

Alternatively, and depending on the history of the plants, it could possibly be a hitchhiking Orthosia hibisci. I don’t say that’s likely, as they’re American and should be emerging as adults at this time of year, but you never know.
Best way to be sure would be to grow her.
